“Alexander,” Hunter says, staring down at my hand.

“Yes?”

“I can feel where this is going, but…”

“Yes?”

“Stop. Think of Benny.”

I roll my eyes. “Ha! He’s no angel. He made out with my ex-boyfriend, I think he’ll get over it.”

“He – what?” he asks.

“Yep, this guy, Maxi, he was-”

“Wait, Maxi?” Hunter asks. “I was wondering who that was. Benny and his sister drove to the gas station with me yesterday, and he was on the phone with someone named Maxi the whole time, on and off. Sounded like they were in a fight? I don’t know, but who is he?”

I feel my eyes grow. “Are you fucking kidding me? He swore they weren’t even talking. But they’re so close, they’re fighting already? Maxi is my ex-boyfriend!”

“Wait,” Hunter says. “Back up. I’m so confused. This is the same person? Benny said ‘I love you’ to your ex-boyfriend?”

The reaction on my face must be volcanic, because Hunter’s face instantly changes.

“Oh, no – I said too much…”

“Tell me you’re kidding,” I demand. “He said those words, only yesterday?”

Hunter sighs and leans back. “Oh, fuck, I didn’t mean to spill the beans, I promise – shit, I didn’t know what I was revealing…never mind, maybe it was another Maxi?”

“Another guy named Maxwell, Maxi for short?”

“It’s a big world out there, you never know…”

I set my jaw. “Okay, it’s official, now I’m definitely fucking his dad.”

“What?” he asks, looking like he’s trying not to laugh. “So now I’m some revenge tool or something?”

“Nope. I’ve wanted to do this all night, now I’m just sure about it.”

“I’m still so confused…and torn…”

“Fine. It’s not like you want me, anyway.”

His jaw tightens. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Is that so?”

“I can prove it, too. Do you remember the other night, our first night here, when everyone met at the hotel bar, and a guy hit on you and then disappeared?”

“Yes! That was so weird. We really hit it off, and then he went to the bathroom and never came back.”

“Because I got jealous and sent him away.”

“What?”

“I didn’t say I was proud of it. He came to stand by the bar to order another drink, and he wouldn’t stop telling his friend how cool you were. He went on and on, and soon I realized I hated it. So I butted in and said, Oh, wait, you mean the blonde guy? You know he’s engaged, right? And that was the end of that.”

“Why did you do that, Hunter?” I ask him.

“Because I was jealous and confused and petty. I’m sorry. Are you mad?”

“I’m…I’m…”

“Yes?” Hunter asks.

Fucking turned on, I think to myself.

Finally I decide to just do it: try to seduce him, and if I fail, I fail. I mean, what’s he going to do – kick me out of the house and let me die in the blizzard?

“No, I’m not mad,” I begin. “Because if I’d matched up with that guy for the trip, and you’d never driven him away, I might not be here right now. And I wouldn’t be able to do this.
